Keith wins - after getting lost!

Keith Johnson reports on the 6 dog race from the Black Isle trail (18th - 19th November 2011)

This was a very fast 4.5 mile trail and making it even better I was getting to race Tobias Leask who was 3^rd in the Dryland World IFSS Championship in Germany Borken, where he should have been 1^st.

The Saturday weather was 7^oCelsius and damp (no snow). It was downhill start for half a mile followed by a sharp right then on to a well-marked trail making it easy to get a big dog team round. Saturday’s times left a 9 second gap between Tobias and me, not a lot, when so much can go wrong.

Sunday we got lost going to the race and I missed my start time by half an hour but was still allowed to run. I was slower this time as Bud the wheel dog, on the left, hurt his front paws so I had to reduce the speed, Tobias had a tangle which hindered his time.

The results showed Saturday 12 minutes 20 seconds and Sunday 12minutes 55 seconds including a 6 minute penalty for being late, this put me last with an average speed of 20.41MPH.

Tobias asked for the penalty I received to be dropped. I was honoured to accept 1^st due to the true sportsmanship from Tobias.

The food I used for the race was using CP30 and Go-0n herbs the dogs are now going to have a weeks holiday in their five star accommodation eatingCP24 then back onto theCP30 for the next three weeks for the race in Darnaway 17 -18 December, close to Nairn in the Highlands, where Tobias and myself can hopefully have a trouble free race.

Darnaway was a very technical race course in one of the best forests I have been in. Graham Scott was my competition; I was on time for this race and had a good clear run round. It was a Saturday only race and I came in first place. The distance was 4.5 miles covered in a time of 14 minutes and 30 seconds, giving an average speed of 18.60MPH which is an excellent result especially when the team includes Monty (my best dog and friend) at nine years old. Monty has been eating the CP range of food since he was four years old and still gives his pups a good race up and down the beach while still feeling great the next day.
