Satanta 'girls' attend Antarctic Midwinter Charity Dinner

On the night of the Summer Solstice, our matching pie-balled 3-dog SDAS National Champions, Siren, Missy & Una, along with their identical 12 year old mother, Zpaarki, donned their posh harnesses and hitched up to a traditional wooden sled  prepared to welcome 190 guests as they arrived to attend to a re-creation of an Antarctic Midwinter Dinner.  The Charity event was celebrating the Centenary of Scott's British Antarctic Expedition in aid of the RRS Discovery and the Dundee Heritage Trust at the Apex Hotel, at the dock side in Dundee.

‘The Girls’, as we affectionately call them, were on their best behavior as the guests graced the red carpet.  The only blot on their copy book was shedding the occasional obvious white husky hair onto the dinner suits and evening dress of the various dignitaries as they seized their photo opportunity with Eddie,  the authentically dressed turn of the century ‘Antarctic explorer’ and his ‘trusty team’.

The guests were thrilled by this spectacle as they awaited the arrival of their guest speaker, Sir Chris Bonington, who found his rail journey North more troublesome than some of his great expeditions as he arrived only minutes before the evening commenced.

As the girls became slightly impatient to make tracks, Siren lived up to her name and began the chorus of husky howls, with her siblings also joining in the Siberian serenade.  Their eerie audition caught the attention of multiple platinum selling, singer-songwriter, Newton Faulkner, who was torn from his pre-gig preparations to meet the choir who were singing this ancient & wild song. The fascination of the ginger dreadlocked musician’s hair and the curled up toes of the fictitious explorer’s reindeer-skin boots provided entertainment for the occasionally restless team, but a few reassuring words from John & I and a crunch or two on some CSJ Poppets kept them content till the eventual sun-down.
